The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Severe Lack of Obesity Injections

Under 10% of individuals that would benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it issues its first guidance on the drugs.

Considering over a billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidance affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with comprehensive and continuous support," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and logistical bottlenecks are key obstacles to widespread access to the treatments that can help people shift considerable weight, notes the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Scarcity

Despite the current most favorable case, the manufacturing of such drugs would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The guideline calls on governments and firms to increase availability, by measures like voluntary licensing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Drugs Work

The injections imitate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and increase the sense of being full so people eat less.

Patients usually begin shedding pounds after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Research points to people may put most of the weight back on after a year of halting the treatment, when their normal appetite resume.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your chance for contracting medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was responsible for over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
