India's capital Wakes Up to Toxic Haze Post Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" range.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the city showed an AQI exceeding 500, which equals ten times the healthy threshold set by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, representing 15-20x above healthy levels.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Developments

Since 2020, authorities had maintained a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that covers the city as the cold season sets in.

Yet recently, the current regional leadership petitioned the highest court to request a easing of the ban.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Decision and Implementation

Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Many monitoring devices throughout the capital showed air quality spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels seen during the festival in at least three years.

Regional Consequences

The widespread use of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe readings of air contamination in the city have remained as a major issue for over a decade and a half, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the air has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst records ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Contamination Factors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a mix of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in adjacent states of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, generating hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air arrives.

Medical and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various studies.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can result in cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in the city.
