From Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.
Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
Yet some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a bill mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
